Failure of Francis Scott Key Bridge provides future engineers a chance to learn
- bell-cot 3y agoFluff, if well-intended. Everything I've seen makes it clear that the engineers knew perfectly well that a "larger than X" ship impact could easily destroy the bridge. Yes, there are little details - but the "10,000-frames-per-second video of a 500 lbs. weight breaking a 100-lbs.-rated rope!" angle is not meaningful here. The meaningful "chance to learn" here is for the decision makers, politicians, and taxpayers. They are the ones who will need to make unappealing choices and pay up, if they don't want their critical infrastructure to be so vulnerable.
