and yet, ostensibly, this is an objective result: A team of European researchers analysed the words in more than 12,000 English-language songs across the genres of rap, country, pop, R&B and rock from 1980 to 2020.   There's plenty of new artists that make real music with real lyrics. They just don't make the mainstream anymore. Check out Father John Misty.

      There are a lot of Billboard charts, and some of them are nowhere near mainstream. The peaks of genre/subculture popularity are not, necessarily, mainstream.
