Stress and anxiety make you more vulnerable to bad decisions like suicide. Stop trying to turn stress and anxiety into an aesthetic personality trait and fashionable dress. Mental illness is not a dress that you can wear. It's toxic stuff to get rid of or at least mitigate.
- singleshot_ 3y agoStress and anxiety are foundational to high performance. Imagining that stressed anxious people are mentally ill is ridiculous.
- makerdiety 3y agoThen maybe stressed anxious people who are both high performing and mentally ill isn't ridiculous? Which makes sense because mediocre people have no stress, anxiety, or mental illness. They're "sane and healthy" instead.
- singleshot_ 3y agoNot every bay is a harbor, but every harbor is a bay.
- makerdiety 3y agoThat's a generalization. And the general is often blind to specific cases which disprove general principles. You'll need to zoom out if you want a better picture of phenomena. Increase your video resolution to arrive at awesome conclusions like I do.
- singleshot_ 3y agoOh, it's a generalization, all right. But every harbor is a bay; not every bay is a harbor.
- makerdiety 3y agoYes. And stress, anxiety, and mental illness positively correlate with high performance. Because mediocre people don't care about quality metrics and stuff. Nor should they. They contrast their superiors in the hierarchy. The good people at the top and the mundane people at the bottom. The universe is in balance. As it should be. This is actually the starting premise for some interesting and powerful theories. You can't have this kinda progress with aesthetic based generalizations that are part of a quick-to-assume epistemology. The best ghetto intuitions can do is paint pretty yet vain pictures with metaphors about sea harbors and bays. Inferior science and knowledge doesn't lead anywhere.

- maximus-decimus 3y agoPeople in my family have chronic anxiety across generation and I haven't heard of any of them killing themselves. Nobody's saying it's an "aesthetic personality trait", just that it doesn't make you suicidal.
