Dark Side of Open Source
- deleted 3y ago[deleted]
- dartos 3y agoI don’t know if being a product is a bad or dark part of open source at all. IIRC Cygnus was celebrated on their launch. The Linux foundation makes money despite Linux being free. The Godot foundation doesn’t seem to be monetizing Godot, but it’s still very much treated as a product. Same with the entire Apache organization.
- hulitu 3y ago> Because it takes a tremendous amount of effort just to convince people to look at what you're building, let alone adopt and contribute to it. Some people don't write software to show off. There were a lot of cool open source projects in the past: fvwm, scilab, octave, xsnow, magic, xcircuit, xfig, gimp, blender, mplayer and so on and so forth. The issue today is that people see open source as a way to use something free to make money but this does not work most of the time.
