My memory of when schools re-opened in some states in August of 2020 was that nobody knew what the hell was going to happen, there was some science indicating that kids' immune systems were much better at handling COVID-19 but most of it was murky and preliminary, and there was a huge downstream risk of kids catching COVID and spreading it to their grandparents. I think back to the episode of This American Life about re-opening from that time titled "Long-Awaited Asteroid Finally Hits Earth". [1] Basically it was seen as extremely risky and I don't fault some school districts for taking the wait-and-see approach. By the end of the school year in 2021 it should have been obvious that schools were safe to reopen however.
It doesn't help that people were getting their COVID-19 news and updates from Twitter which was a huge mess of mis/disinformation, rumors, quack science and purely ideological/partisan arguments over COVID-19 safety protocols. Just an all around mess, remember when people were saying Vitamin D would prevent COVID-19 infection?
