I've tried it both ways - logged in to reddit, and not logged in. Either way, I can access old.reddit.com while VPN'd. Independent of your question, I've recently discovered that DNS settings (and VPN) can limit access to websites in very targeted and surprising ways. Perhaps try changing your DNS?
