Around 8 years ago, I read a paper from biologists who simulated the development of 2 similar species that differed only slightly in reproduction rate and competed for the same area and food. The faster reproducing species eradicated the other in a little bit more than 30 generations, IIRC. Without agression or social behaviour. Which nonetheless may have played a role.
