This is what Lisp is good at; emacs/slime and you can experiment/plan your project together. Python tries this with it's only repl (see the Django comment also; that solution works ok, but nothing compared to slime) or with notebooks and stuff. It's far behind though and I would much rather forever just use emacs/slime for everything. I do for my own projects, but for others I have to cry in my soup.
