I watched it. The series is decent, but not a masterpiece. The big deal about the books is a lot about emotions (the second one especially), the 3 bodies problem investigation is a big deal, but ends at episode 3 in the show.
Arguably, it's not a lot about war and bad evil guys, but that's how i perceived it in the show.
There is a strong sense of scientific progress in the books which is really lacking in the TV show, probably due to inventions getting limited screen time.
Oh and the big plot twist of the first book, the confirmation of things, comes at the end of the book, so you were never sure, but in the show it gets thrown in your face, which did take away from it.
It was hard to adapt, so they did a decent job.
I'm terribly afraid that the protagonist of season 2 will not be up to the protagonist of tge second book. Liu Ji (Seul in the show) is an extremely deep character that you get to know very intimately in the book, I doubt they will be able to pull that off.
Aside from that, it's a watchable show. I found myself way more engaged watching Severance, same for my wife even though she hasn't read the books.
There were a bunch of scenes that really screamed "American made", like when the lady shows up on the airplane, threatening, it felt somewhat disappointing.
SPOILER FROM NOW (scroll past my comment if you don't want to read)

The trisolarians are not gangsters, they are scientific, they need to destroy humanity because they cannot trust it, but they were considering living together.
- me_me_me 3y agoSPOILERS trisolarians never considered co-existing with humans. Only when sword holder was established they changed their mind, and the moment swordholder changes they reversed cooperation stance. I love to see how netflix will handle it, the books are quite misogynistic. In the books Liu Ji (logic) is contrasted with emotional and unreasonable women.
- Fire-Dragon-DoL 3y agoSorry I used incorrect wording, by "coexist" I mean they considered to let them survive (which they do), without exterminating the whole race, while lying changed something, at least that's how I interpreted it. I read the books too.
- me_me_me 3y agoMaybe its up to interpretations, I never had a doubt their goal was to get rid of humans. Everything else was smoke and mirrors to device weak minded humans to not resist by giving them hope of peace. They despised humans for having stable planet and squandering the potential.
- Fire-Dragon-DoL 3y agoI mean, that wouldn't explain why they allowed them to live on the planet then (in book 3)
- me_me_me 3y agoAre you referring to Australian gulag plot? I am blanking out a bit on that part it was quite few years when i read it, but if thats what you are referring to. Wasn't it just an concentration camp and later on a zoo of savage caveman in a nutshell? That is maybe fate worse than extermination.
- Fire-Dragon-DoL 3y agoI'm referring to that. If I remember correctly, they said they did that on purpose to reduce their population. But I keep interpreting that as very scientific: they have very detailed specifications they have to match and they don't care if it's ruthless, they will proceed. But they could have easily exterminated them instead. In the end the "other race" proceeded to erase the whole solar system without blinking and with no possibility to recover. By comparison, the Trisolarians are nice people
- me_me_me 3y agoThat's very interesting. I had completely different interpretation of it :D I interpreted it as very effective way to self-gather humans into one spot where they start killing each other (due to lack of resources) and at the end they can wipe off the remaining few survivors. > In the end the "other race" proceeded to erase the whole solar system without blinking and with no possibility to recover. By comparison, the Trisolarians are nice people causing brutal genocide and keeping sentient population at neolithic tech levels doesn't sound all that nice, in comparison to instant death due to artificially caused supernova
- Fire-Dragon-DoL 3y agoI highly doubt they will be able to handle the second book in any decent way. The deep exploration of Liu Ji emotions and mentality is really hard to transform in a tv show. The whole point where he creates his partner will not hold up, sigh
