The kid is good, almost 3000 rated at this age is impressive. Magnus is far from unfamiliar with this format as well so beating Magnus is not nothing. But this format involved some luck and a 3000 rated player (online) will take some games from Magnus, sometimes. It's not a slower, over the board game where almost nobody has a chance against Magnus. It's pretty much a different game.
- Scarblac 3y agoFor non chess players: 1 minute means the players each have 1 minute total thinking time for the entire game. Except there's a concept called "premove" - you can move when your opponent hasn't moved yet, and if possible it will be played automatically once he does, taking no time off your clock. But of course, you have to guess what he's going to do.
- kelipso 3y agoTime for premove depends on the website you play in. I think chesscom premove time is 0.01 seconds. lichess premove time used be 0 seconds, I think they added a millisecond recently.
- kelipso 3y agoLol guessed it when I read the title. But I genuinely get annoyed now when you have headlines that says some kid beat Carlsen and it turns out it's some bullet, blitz or rapid game. Debate all you want and I'm sure plenty of people have debated it to death but it doesn't count unless it's a classical game and they should stop headlining these irrelevant shorter time control games against kids.
- bionsystem 3y agoA rapid game would count as a huge achievement as it's Carlsen's specialty, and it's probably not very easy to beat him at blitz either.
- Miner49er 3y agoIt's still a huge achievement. Carlsen is probably still top two or three in the world at bullet.
- hilux 3y agoFor the kid (or any player), of course, beating Magnus in a game is the chess memory of a lifetime. But [for the public] as far as signifying anything meaningful in the global chess landscape ... not really.
- joshxyz 3y agoits like winning a mini game of half court shoot out with stephen curry. still well done on the kid tho lol. at 10 i dont even have enough iq.
- Scarblac 3y agoCarlsen says he's not sure he'll play in classical round robin tournaments again, he wants to play the faster formats.
- throwaway81523 3y agoFaster formats = rapid (25 minutes more or less), not 1 minute. Bullet (1 minute) is way less predictable (trick openings, etc). I think pretty much any 2300+ player could beat Magnus at bullet a few percent of the time. My money would be on Magnus every game, but I'd expect to lose once in a while. There was an online game (3 minute) where GM Luis Paolo Supi beat Magnus using an insane checkmate trap. It was all over youtube, showing Magnus shaking his hand as if it had burned. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6jpYWwGRD8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6jpYWwGRD8 (Added: Gothamchess analysis, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NX4tGHEjItY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NX4tGHEjItY ) Still, doing that at age 10 is impressive.
- wslh 3y agoIt could be that in the little advantages game, a super smart kid at 10 has a brain which is more performant than from someone at 33, even if it is Magnus Carlsen. Because this is a "bullet" style and not a normal Chess game with more time to think and correct thinking errors.
