A related method I follow is to read parallel translations in my target language and English. This way I can read the kind of material I want to read and not a graded reader or newspaper. Reading Persian poetry in parallel with English translations is one of my favourite things to do. There’s no friction with having to look up words all the time, or, much more time consuming, consult a grammar for an unfamiliar construction.
