I flew into Kansai in 2003(?), with a J-rail foreigner pass and fell asleep on the Shinkansen (which I wasn't supposed to be on). 9 hours & ~1100 miles of train rides later I ended up at my buddy's place in Tokushima. It cost 110 yen, locally. That was the first time I appreciated how hard it is to navigate the modern world if you're illiterate.
