  The number of applications to participate are not publicised - but it's an infamous race amongst ultrarunners, so I suspect they get quite a lot of applications. However - the way to apply is also not publicised, so there are probably a fair number of people who'd like to enter but don't figure out how. 35 applications are accepted each year.
