This is where the classic rhetoric of "the professor is creating a hostile environment / is making people feel unsafe / caused irreparable harm to underprivileged groups" will come in. I'm not justifying what he said in any way, but he touched a sacred third rail which is going to make people not want to be associated with his name in any way, at least for a few years until everybody forgets this ever happened. Possible he will resign due to pressure or ostracism.
