Decommissioned offshore structures could offer only limited ecological benefits
- ggm 3y agoI try to divide these things in two. Firstly, does the science feel right? Is there some massive counterfactual I need to understand? Secondly, the cost/benefit decision usually is highly politically charged and either excludes a significant component (fishing industry, wildlife, tourism, climate effects) or treats it as some externalities to incur cost or consequence. Often times one factors upside implies another factors downside. So I think this paper is probably correct: there is a limit to upside benefits of the structures remaining in the sea. But, the cost benefit decision will be inherently more complex and a case by case decision.
