In the US, subpoena's without a judge's signature have a lot of room to be challenge and if Apple isn't challenging, just handing over when a cop comes asking, that's their right to avoid the work of defending users but it's also reasonable for users to know that Apple won't take steps to defend them when it can because Apple doesn't want the difficulty. This is true for pharmacies in the US too which all hand over your prescriptions to cops without a court-signed warrant, just a procedural request from the pig.
