Everything sold to consumers should be consumer serviceable
- MrVandemar 3y agoAnd have the cost of recycling/disposal baked into the price. Then the E-waste would likely halve or better, people would use their current technology for longer, and memory-guzzling and cpu-guzzling websites and applications would be streamlined and made more efficient so they work with the average capable device. A pipe dream, of course.
- out-of-ideas 3y agolol like the plastic waterbottles then they deny it being recycled cuz the caps are on them..
- Ekaros 3y agoAnd then EU made those caps non-removable. As in not insignificant force is required.
- hulitu 3y ago> And have the cost of recycling/disposal baked into the price. This is already done. /s
- Ekaros 3y agoIn some countries it is. You can take your old appliances to sellers or their recycling locations and they take them for free.
- samatman 3y agoWhat does this mean, in practical terms? If a circuit board you own burns out a capacitor, you can replace it: use a logic probe to isolate the problem, order the part on Mouser, reflow the board, hope for the best. If you're saying everything sold to consumers should be serviceable by a person with no preexisting skills, using tools they already happen to have, I think that's completely unreasonable. Technology means specialization.
- thefz 3y agoOK, and if my stereo breaks I can take it to the radio repair guy down the road. But this is because the stereo was never conceived to not be repaired in the first place. Baked-in motherboards are. Glued batteries are. The examples are countless. Ever tried to replace the battery to a pair of bluetooth earphones?
- AstralStorm 3y agoSurprisingly yes, and besides the funny lithium ion pack shape, it was easy because it wasn't an Apple device. Well, as easy as it could be. There were spudgers involved.
- thefz 3y agoBut then the stakeholders will see this as a missed opportunity for more profit and will be angry.
