There were many potential reasons for Facebook to buy Instagram, and while "buy out potential competitors" was a good one I wondered how much that really had to do with it. I think this new buy-out increases the evidence for that theory, though, and I wonder how that affects the future longevity of social networks. MySpace never had the money to buy out Facebook.
