Tell HN: My 2016 iPhone SE is a living proof of iOS enshittification
Everything works better on my 1st gen iPhone SE (iOS 15.8). Except, alas, speed.
The most clear-cut example for me is typing:
Typing and autocorrection work so much better, with autocorrect usually getting it right (across French and English) unlike on my latest iOS iPhone 12 which clearly "learns" progressively and ends up with a bunch of crazy suggestions after a month or so, forcing me to reset the custom dictionary.
I think this clearly due to latest iPhones using some local neural net (because the model can run that so why not) compared to older models’ simple, immutable, or very lightly fine-tunable, model.
- bell-cot 3y agoYes...but per Doctorow's definition (via Wikipedia), I would use "enshittification" only to describe the intentional more-profits-via-lower-costs degradation of things. What you're describing sounds more like software "feature crap", where the devs are tasked with endlessly providing more & cooler-sounding bullet point for the suits and Sales Dept. to brag about the software having. Not to say that there aren't plenty of devs with itchy fingers, who can't leave well enough alone...
- puttycat 3y agoYes. For me it’s also about product managers justifying their existence by coming up with useless new features.

- warrenm 3y agoI find autocorrupt has only gotten better over the years - it still picks some whacky choices sometimes, but far less often than it used to I have been running on iOS since 2011 (4GS), and have gotten a new one every 3 or four years (6S+, 11, 15 Pro Max) My replacement criteria is entirely tied to performance and call quality - I work off my phone, and it HAS to Just Work™ ... as soon as it does not, it is time to replace
