Before I understood how voltage regulators worked, I thought you could just attach a LM7805 to a 22 volt lithium source for running the electronics on a high-power robot. I learned that a failing/overheating LM7805 will pass the full voltage to your microcontroller, and that the microcontroller core will still be "oven hot" a full minute or two after it releases its innards.
