I work on a project where the web app takes 30mb before it fully renders, makes 500 requests, 10 seconds before interactivity. No one cares. No one bats an eye. Pages don't follow web semantics (ctrl/middle click to open in a new tab? no we'll do some javascript instead). Plus a bunch of other stuff no one bothers with.
It's a huge mess. You _can_ make beautiful, simple, elegant and useful things with web tech, but the number of people who care enough to do so are so so few.
Making good stuff doesn't matter anymore.
- xyst 3y agoIf devin ai is as good as the tech demo. The demographic of bottom of the barrel devs and middle managers will disappear almost instantly. I have worked on those projects as well. At that point, it’s collect a paycheck and log off.
- janice1999 3y agoI really doubt AI will *improve* the quality of code out there. It just makes it easier to churn out barely functional copy/pasted code where the "prompt engineer" has no reason to understand any of the underlying code. Good performant software requires domain knowledge and experience to architect things correctly to solve the problem at hand.
- emestifs 3y agoAI wont help product direction or design. You'll have a bunch of rotten, enshittifying, terribly (ux, ui) designed software even faster, all in the hands of the business decision makers.
- cosmotic 3y agoPage load times have a meaningful impact on sales. > The survey from Digital.com asked 1,250 online shoppers how long they typically wait for web pages to load before abandoning a website and their intended purchases. > Fifty-three percent expect the page to load in three seconds or less, and 21% say slow-loading pages are their biggest gripe when shopping online. Half will simply abandon their shopping carts if pages don’t load fast enough, the report said. https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/01/28/report-shows-consumers-wont-wait-long-for-web-pages-to-load/ https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/01/28/report-shows-consumer...
- emestifs 3y agoWhen your customers are enterprise, page load times dont mean anything. Some 500k/yr VP gets a demo, signs off, and $20/hr users are told to use the system. If page load times mattered, then i wouldn't have written what I did above
- m0llusk 3y agoThat is a huge wake up call. Thanks for posting that.
