Supreme Court unanimously rules against government in No Fly List case
- roshin 3y ago> After being denied asylum, Sweden allegedly flew Fikre back to Portland, Ore., on a private jet. With all of the migrants that Sweden had, I'm surprised that this was not only denied asylum, but flown to the us on a private jet.
- papercrane 3y agoThe issue in Sweden is that he didn't have enough evidence to convince Sweden that he was arrested and tortured at the behest of the American government. Since he was on the no-fly list no air carrier would take him as a passenger, so Sweden's only options were to keep him or fly him in a private jet. https://www.wweek.com/portland/blog-31874-swedish-government-denies-asylum-for-u-s-citizen-who-claims-torture-at-request-of-u-s-government.html https://www.wweek.com/portland/blog-31874-swedish-government...
- fffdfddf 3y agoHaving worked in multiple military communities, I can attest that 75% of the time "Classified" means "we did shoddy work and we want to hide it". This sounds like a good decision.

- tremon 3y agoThe FBI questioned him while in Sudan, according to court filings, telling Fikre he was on the No Fly List and could be removed if he became an informant. Fikre allegedly refused and moved to the United Arab Emirates, where he claims he was then abducted and tortured for months by the country’s secret police at the FBI’s request This is why secret laws and secret courts are incompatible with a healthy democracy.
- impossiblefork 3y agoThis pattern of requesting that someone become an informant and then punishing the person when he refuses is also something that's a common US pattern, where it's been used against European business people. Alstom had a fantastic turbine business that they bought from ABB, then they had some trouble, 3 billion, then the US arrests a guy and fines them 700 million, and that's enough to put the company in dire straits, and then GE bids on it and gets it, so suddenly France no longer controls the company that makes the steam turbines for the nuclear plants. Of course, that was re-acquired, but for a while France was dependent on a US company for their nuclear plant steam turbines, and the gas turbine part is wholly in the US.
- sickofparadox 3y agoThe FBI constantly plays these games of obfuscation and "rights hot potato" with US Citizens, and quite frankly it is horrific. The premier policing agency of the United States should not be wracking its brain figuring out new ways to circumvent the rights of citizens - it should be fact finding and using those facts to convict people or doing nothing to them at all.
- readthenotes1 3y agoThe history of the FBI shows many despicable acts and actors. I'm not sure it's worth the price.
- rokkitmensch 3y ago"Premier policing agency" is not their image in the popular zeitgeist.
- exabrial 3y agoOne cannot/shall not have a right removed without a trial.
