It's not necessary to have the ground and there probably isn't enough cost savings to remove it. They've used the same design for years and just disconnecting the ground wouldn't make any sense because then the grounded cable would be pointless.
- astrange 3y agoIt's made that way so that if you travel you can replace the wall side with the local connector. Some of them are always grounded. Though, that's not really more convenient than carrying a power adapter around, so they didn't have to do it that way.
