Report on the Censorship-Industrial Complex: The Top Organizations to Know
- MithrilTuxedo 3y agoWhy does he keep putting "misinformation" and "disinformation" in quotes like that? He says something about those terms having been invented by folks at the #1 organization on the list, but... are we to believe Google Ngram is part of the plot? >What the Mueller investigation didn’t accomplish in ousting Trump from office What? That's not what the order said the investigation was supposed to do. It also didn't accomplish world peace or end famine. I don't what Taibbi is trying to accomplish, but misunderstanding and miscommunication allow evil into the world.
- verdverm 3y agoFor some context, there was a Supreme Court case at oral arguments today Murthy v. Missouri (social media & govt - alleged coercion & collusion during covid) https://www.politico.com/news/2024/03/18/supreme-court-murthy-missouri-problems-00147591 https://www.politico.com/news/2024/03/18/supreme-court-murth... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0TjQaI0Rr0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0TjQaI0Rr0 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murthy_v._Missouri https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murthy_v._Missouri https://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/murthy-v-missouri-3/ https://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/murthy-v-missour... https://www.supremecourt.gov/search.aspx?filename=/docket/docketfiles/html/public/23a243.html https://www.supremecourt.gov/search.aspx?filename=/docket/do...
- chiefalchemist 3y ago> Anti-disinformation groups talk endlessly about building “resilience” to disinformation (which in practice means making sure the public hears approved narratives so often that anything else seems frightening or repellent), and audiences are trained to question not only the need for checks and balances, but competition. Competition is increasingly frowned upon not just in the “marketplace of ideas” (an idea itself more and more often described as outdated), but in the traditional capitalist sense. The lack of competition is bad, bbut so is the lack of spectrum. That is, if there is competition it's typically dumb'ed down to binary, with all nuance, subtitles and perhaps contradictions are removed. What's often left can't be won by either side. But perhaps that's exactly the point?
- verdverm 3y agoIndeed, and after the context removal, each side is typically at either end of the spectrum. The amplified polarization makes it difficult to have adult conversations about the most pressing issues of the day. People in the middle rightly feel left out ideologically
- t0bia_s 3y agoThat is what politics make from society. Divide it to left or right and keep us fighting each other to keep us voting them with hope of change for better future based on our point of view that some of them might represent.
- verdverm 3y agoThere is an amount of foreign influence that sows discord and amplifies the worst speech and ideas as well
- hlieberman 3y agoThis is just a straw-man boogymen about speech supression; it's not even internally consistent. It claims on the one hand that Maria Ressa believes Wikileaks "isn't journalism" (implying she is in favor of censoring it), but on the other hand cites her ties to Pierre Omidyar as one of the sources of censorship. You know -- the person who founded and paid for The Intercept, one of the primary places that was the outlet for Wikileaks and Snowden's work.
- ipython 3y agoI guess we all forget how to truly eliminate speech you don’t like: befriend a billionaire and sue the source of the unwanted speech out of existence (ref gawker).
