Dell tells remote workers that they won't be eligible for promotion

- malfist 3y agoReprehensible. WFH is fine if you want to work for them, but screw you if you perform above the baseline. I can't imagine this will make remote workers work harder
- dagmx 3y agoThis is always disheartening to hear. I’m a principal engineer at a FAANG-like company and was told a similar: promotions unlikely if you’re remote. Granted the next level up is hard to get even if I’m in office. I’m remote for health reasons but at the same time no competing company has more interesting work for me while also being remote. So I find myself wanting to coast more because what’s the point of exceeding?
- kelnos 3y agoThe dumb thing about this is they're certainly going to see lower productivity from their remote workers now (why do more than the bare minimum if you have no career advancement prospects?), and I'm sure they'll circularly use that as justification that WFH hurts productivity. It is really astounding how companies make decisions against their own interests like this. Even if the goal is to get people to quit so they can avoid the cost of doing more layoffs, long-term this will still likely be negative for them.
