This particular study isn't limited to LLMs. It is about how to test consciousness in a wide variety of things. We have no tests. People may think their dog is conscious, but we can't test that. We can't even test if other people are conscious. What about invertebrates? Bacteria? Rocks, atoms, AI, your laptop etc? While somebody might say "yes, no, definetly not, yes, maybe" ... still, no tests. And consciousness in this particular proposal deals with whether or not it "‘feels like’ something to be the target system".
