Power is the capacity to paint social reality as ones own interests.
One must always ask "Cui bono?". Who are the powers behind each
declaration of what is now "normal"?
Even before the C19 pandemic was in full swing we heard about the "new
normal". It consisted of everyone working entirely from home, having all
food delivered, needing to carry a digital passport and use a smartphone
to access everything, bans on public meetings... and so on and so on...
How much of that stuck? Basically none of it. All those strident
redefinitions of how society was now changed forever evaporated and
the world went back to business as usual.
Those who managed to ratchet gains were BigTech and the Insecurity
Industry. Zoom and Teams were the winners. Amazon and companies that
write shitty smartphone apps that make dining in restaurants more
miserable. Security camera companies. And anti-democratic governments
that want to clamp down on protest.
Look for who benefits from the "new normal" and you'll see those are
the voices shouting about it the loudest.
BTW I am surprised to see the BBC pushing an intellectual self-defence
and counter-propaganda line. Maybe the world is changing! :)
