Linux 6.9 Change Allows Old Macs Using Firewire to Enjoy Virtualization Support
- sillywalk 3y agoFTA: The LSI FW643 PCIe to FireWire 800 interface may be EOL but it is the only one that does not use a PCIe to PCI bridge. It was used in the following Apple machines: MacBookPro10,1 MacBookPro9,2 MacBookPro6,2 MacBookPro5,1 Macmini6,1 Macmini3,1 iMac12,2 iMac9,1 iMac8,1 It is reliable and enables FireWire audio interfaces to be used on modern machines. Virtualization allows for flexible access to professional audio software.
- johnklos 3y agoThis is the kind of thinking that makes me happy. Too often people are conditioned to believe new is good, old is bad, we shouldn't support or even maintain old (which is why 32 bit x86 support is starting to disappear). We should strive for less waste, not more. Making it possible to pass Firewire to virtual machines is great!
- jwells89 3y agoI believe it’s often not so much that old technology is bad or shouldn’t be maintained, but rather that in some circumstances, supporting old tech can be disproportionately burdensome considering the percentage of users served and can prove to be obstructive to sometimes much-needed efforts to refactor and modernize. None of that seems to apply in this situation so there’s no reason not to.
