Python Users: BIPClip Is After Your Bitcoin Wallet, via PyPI
- ArtTimeInvestor 3y agoBitcoin self-custody is still an unsolved problem. Public "best practice" is to order a hardware wallet from some popular manufacturer and then follow the steps laid out on the manufacturers' website. That approach has a plethora of security issues. I have grilled multiple people who claim to be knowledgeable with Bitcoin, and not a single one could lay out a system to securely create a wallet. Everyone had a strong opinion on how to do it, but none of their approaches were secure. A community vetted step-by-step guide on how to self-custody without being exposed to the incompetence or malice of a single party would be a big step forward for Bitcoin.
- rlpb 3y agoHow would one be sure this guide were safe to follow? Ultimately one has to trust someone, which isn't really different to trusting a hardware manufacturer. One still has to decide on trust based on reputation, etc.
- ArtTimeInvestor 3y agoHow would one be sure this guide were safe to follow? Similar to how one knows that collisions in SHA-256 are rare. It's a widely discussed theory. You don't have to trust a single source to tune in to this theory. If the guide is widely discussed and becomes as "common knowledge" as the list of planets in the solar system, you don't have to trust a single source. You can read the discussions about the steps everywhere around the web and form your own opinion.
