- beaugunderson 3y agogood timing, I'm headed through there in a couple of weeks... curious how it ended up here though :)
- dustincoates 3y agoIt has how in the article: > IN 1979, THREE STUDENTS AT Sul Ross State University decided they needed a spot away from campus to study. And why not grind on those exam reviews with a view? So Jim Kitchen, Bill Wagner, and Travis Miller carted a desk up to the top of Hancock Hill, north of campus.
- elaus 3y agoI took GPs comment more like a "how did this topic end up here in HN, just now as I plan to travel there". Admittedly I also can't see the connection to IT, but I enjoyed the read nevertheless :)
- Paul-Craft 3y agoBaader-Meinhof strikes again. https://www.dictionary.com/e/tech-science/baader-meinhof-phenomenon/ https://www.dictionary.com/e/tech-science/baader-meinhof-phe...
- dustincoates 3y agoAh that makes more sense indeed. I've, incidentally, been to the desk once. It was in pretty bad shape at that point (perhaps it's been replaced since) and had the worst smell I've ever come across. Alpine is a great little town, though. I often tell my wife that I'd love to move there, maybe in retirement. It's got a "quick" connection to Big Bend and Marfa, and because of the isolation, you don't really need to worry about it becoming overrun.
- joloooo 3y agoTerlingua nearby is a vibe too. Sadly I do fear a spill over from Marfa might ruin Alpine.
- beaugunderson 3y agowhat don't you like about Marfa? we've been to Terlingua, Alpine, and Marfa several times and liked all three.
- joloooo 3y agoIt's a great city with a beautiful history. Sadly, over the past 10 years, it's been turned into a gentrified Wild West LARPing ground for Austin influencers. Housing has become egregious, and it has lost its local charm because of the influx of visitors. Most businesses are no longer locally owned.

- ljsprague 3y agoPresumably for the eclipse.
- joloooo 3y agoThat would be awesome to be there for that. Sadly Alpine is outside of the eclipse path. https://media.kcentv.com/assets/KCEN/images/bacc9198-c629-4956-ae33-7f0c0d28376f/bacc9198-c629-4956-ae33-7f0c0d28376f_1920x1080.jpg https://media.kcentv.com/assets/KCEN/images/bacc9198-c629-49...

- beaugunderson 3y agoI added the trail, the viewpoint, and the article link to OSM right after this made it to HN, didn’t expect it to be useful so soon!
