My underground Nazi-resistance fighter, Auschwitz survivor and later staunch-idealist socialist-communist grandfather loved this book and identified with it deeply. Edit: I might add that this book and author had a similar sort of status on this side of the iron curtain as Joseph Heller and his military Catch-22 humor.
