Fedora 41's GNOME to go Wayland-only, says goodbye to X.org
- anthk 3y agoAccesibility is not an issue under Gnome+Wayland, but X11 allows far more hackability and easy keymap remapping for some cheap Chinese bluetooth keyboard with mad layouts spawning your browser on pressing [ESC].

- AlienRobot 3y agoEveryone is moving to wayland, meanwhile I'm using Xfce. I wonder if it will be a problem in the future if my DE doesn't support wayland.
- rbanffy 3y agoEventually it might. The same as some software is built with implicit linuxisms and systemd-isms that requires patches to build and run on BSD-like systems and other Unixes, there will be a point where developers will make assumptions on the presence of X and Wayland that'll make it difficult to make software run on X. We already are at that stage with browsers - running Firefox on one machine while displaying the UI in another is a huge pain because the rendering is happening on the X client and it's pushing pixels across the network to the X server.
- hawski 3y agoIt is not across the network. A Unix domain socket is hardly something that could be called "across the network". Also I am pretty sure Firefox, for example, uses the MIT-SHM extension (Shared Memory).
