The article itself lists a few different points, but none of them clearly describe a leading theory for why openly carrying a firearm increases someone’s likelihood of committing suicide. I don’t want to jump to this conclusion without others saying it too, but this looks to me like a very low quality article for the headline’s statement.
There was mention that states with open carry laws don’t require permitting or background checks, but neither of those are directly related to one’s likelihood of attending suicide.
- Ancapistani 3y ago> openly carrying a firearm increases someone’s likelihood of committing suicide I didn't read that in the article. I read that states with open carry have a higher firearms suicide rate. That makes sense - states where firearms are more common, they're more more available and more people are interested in advocating for carry. There was nothing saying that carrying increases likelihood of suicide by firearm at the individual level. I also didn't see a mention in either the article or the linked study of the overall suicide rate for the population. A change in modality is very different from a change in rate.
