Look; I'm no more of a fan of big-copyright than anyone else, but I'm still pretty sure that investment in tools that ultimately serve to let you download YouTube videos bypassing the site (etc) return fairly little in terms of either creativity or productivity to the world.
- jdiff 3y agoThis is such a crazy comment to read from my perspective because the answer seems so painfully obvious to me: of course it encourages creativity, and of course it boosts productivity. Being able to obtain, manipulate, and reshare bits of culture like videos is a huge source of creativity. Even in the commercial creative world, being able to download a trailer, advertisement, or really any video with a particular effect and take it frame-by-frame to dissect and understand it is a powerful learning tool. And it's valuable to be able to archive works that are likely to be torn down or that need to be accessed offline. As an example of the latter, I'm currently a high school software teacher, I often download videos demonstrating this or that and share the MP4s with my students since YouTube is blocked.
- tmaly 3y agoThere is some gray area with fair use I have found. When I was in the university, some of my roommates were in the film department. Their was this understanding that you could use a certain number of seconds of a copyrighted video in your project. But in practice today, it is hit or miss. I have seen a TikTok stitching Harry Potter to make a parody taken down as violating copyright. While there exists other videos on TikTok doing the same thing for longer duration.
- jdiff 3y agoThis isn't fair use changing, it's the platforms. It's all fair use, but it's easier to take things down without question, without even receiving an actual DMCA takedown notice. Music going on in the background for a 15 second video does not replace or in any way negatively affect the market value of music used. And yet, my fiancee has scrolled through her TikTok bookmarks to show me how long she can go without running into a video that isn't silent with a copyright notice banner along the bottom. It's not about fair use or even making sense, it's about the ego and what they can get away with.
- axus 3y agoAll kinds of things get censored, downloading YouTube videos helps counteract that.
- Larrikin 3y agoMore than once, artists I've subscribed to have taken down previous popular videos to promote their current work. Usually this is obviously directed by the label. Thats just the most egregious example. Sometimes people get bored with Youtube and delete all their content, sometimes people want to reinvent their channel, sometimes Youtube gets involved and mutes or deletes the video for all kinds of reasons. I would say if there is anything you actually like on Youtube you're a fool if you don't download it.

- 6510 3y agoI use to follow quite a lot of very niche inventors and research projects. I think 1-2% of the youtube videos are still onthere. No one has to bother resuming the effort. Sometimes people started from scratch multiple times - and put it on youtube again. The irony.
- LoganDark 3y agoYou heard it here first, folks. Inspiration is dead. I'm sure none of the artworks in museums were influenced by anything that the artists saw. Jokes aside, I download all my music from YouTube rather than just using bookmarks, because I've had bookmarks go dead before and it is not a fun experience (to know exactly where you want to go, just to find out that it's been removed).
- TylerE 3y agoShouldn't that be the artist's prerogative? Aren't most people here pretty big on "right to be forgotten"?
- dns_snek 3y agoCreators and publishers are free to remove content that wasn't paid for, and we're free to archive it for personal use and enjoyment.
- dotnet00 3y agoIt's very common for people to download the stream archives of streamers they like, to summarize, translate and clip funny or interesting parts. It provides a pretty decent return to everyone, making the content more accessible to viewers, and providing the streamer with more publicity.
- mavhc 3y agoYoutube search has a filter for creative commons. But they removed the ability to download those videos specifically licenced for reuse
- 6510 3y agohttps://creativecommons.org/faq/#what-do-i-do-if-someone-tries-to-place-effective-technological-measures-such-as-drm-on-my-cc-licensed-material https://creativecommons.org/faq/#what-do-i-do-if-someone-tri... > Can I use effective technological measures (such as DRM) when I share CC-licensed material? > No. When you receive material under a Creative Commons license, you may not place additional terms and conditions on the reuse of the work. This includes using effective technological measures (ETMs) that would restrict a licensee’s ability to exercise the licensed rights. > A technological measure is considered an ETM if circumventing it carries penalties under laws fulfilling obligations under Article 11 of the WIPO Copyright Treaty adopted on December 20, 1996, or similar international agreements. Generally, this means that the anti-circumvention laws of various jurisdictions would cover attempts to break it. > For example, if you remix a CC-licensed song, and you wish to share it on a music site that places digital copy-restriction on all uploaded files, you may not do this without express permission from the licensor. However, if you upload that same file to your own site or any other site that does not apply DRM to the file, and a listener chooses to stream it through an app that applies DRM, you have not violated the license. It seems you would have to link to a download from the description? Hiding the derived work some place else seems to get in the way of reuse. If the material is already distributed elsewhere and you post it as~is on youtube it seems the license is satisfied?
- mavhc 3y agoYoutube used to have a download button for CC videos, they removed it
- 6510 3y agoA youtube video can show quite a lot more incriminating stuff than a bit of copyright infringement. A download button should be a requirement.
