Are there any practical phones that are truly free, including the baseband?

Not including the baseband, but Librem 5 runs an FSF-endorsed OS (PureOS) and has a removable modem with a hardware kill switch. (My daily driver.)

Can't wait for the perfect candidate. Vote with your wallet. I'm daily driving the PinePhone. It is listed as beta. It has bugs. That's OK.

I bought a pinephone but I couldn't get it working (I could get calls, no internet) despite a fair amount of playing around. Would have loved to switch but ended going back to android.

You should ask for a help on the pine64 forums. They're usually helpful.
