What an absurd article. Now tech CTOs should be sitting with Senegalese tribal elders to evaluate the "environmental costs of AI?" Aside from aphorisms, what new data could these elders possibly provide that the engineers have not already evaluated?
Tech out of all industries is perhaps the most focused on renewables. Most big tech DCs run entirely on renewable energy. Most tech companies have extensive focus on the environment throughout their pipelines for consumer goods and their own infrastructure. For instance, Apple Park not only provides power for itself but for thousands of surrounding homes. The same with Google's new campus in the area.
I feel like hating on tech has simply become trendy. Until these people start backing their arguments with data, I'll dismiss them as meaningless. There are industries many orders of magnitude worse than tech. It makes zero sense to spit on one of the few industries that actually tries to minimize environmental impact.
