What’s even more annoying is they’ve stated they’re against backups in principle. They feel that users shouldn’t back up history and to do so is antithetical to their version of “security”.
It’s the thing I dislike most about Signal. Sadly, there aren’t any good alternatives either.
- Arnt 3y agoHm? I have backups running, it's under Settings → Conversations. Do you have a source for that bit about dislike?
- infotainment 3y agoYou have backups running on Android — the linked post is about how iOS doesn’t support backups. (And hasn’t for years, so it’s clearly not a priority) Anyway, this related comment thread notes similar impressions of the Signal team: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25686475 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25686475 > “I've tried to report bugs and talk to developers about this but there's one fundamental problem here - the Signal team fundamentally does not value chat history the same way a lot of people do. They think that destroying all chats is a reasonable thing to do when things get hard - which is the exact opposite to many WhatsApp users, which deeply value images and texts sent to them on that platform.” > “It's not a technical issue - they just think you're wrong when you want to keep your conversations.”
- Arnt 3y agoAh, so it's not a principled opposition to backups, just someone twisting words. Film at 11.
- infotainment 3y agoAh, so you’re not actually interested in this topic, you’re just a troll. Classic.
