Is there a chance to gradually replace these rare-earths by more common stuff?
- ars 14y agoNo. rare-earths have very unusual properties not found in other elements. BTW, don't let the name "rare-earth" confuse you - not all of them are actually rare, they are just called that.
- lunarscape 14y agoActually Japan has invested heavily in creating replacements for certain rare-earths since China (temporarily) cut exports to them a while back. So has the US. See "Research: Removing rare-earth" [1] [1] http://eandt.theiet.org/magazine/2012/04/releasing-the-rare-earths.cfm http://eandt.theiet.org/magazine/2012/04/releasing-the-rare-...
- moreati 14y agoFor anything that requires a permanent magnet, on the scale of gadgets->cars I'd say unlikely. On industrial/generation scales possibly. See e.g. http://spectrum.ieee.org/green-tech/wind/superconductors-for-whopping-wind-turbines http://spectrum.ieee.org/green-tech/wind/superconductors-for.... For other uses IDK, IANAP etc
