The idea of abandoning cities to frolic in the wilderness is naive and disconnected from historical reality. For most of human history, life was defined by grueling labor, scarcity, disease and servitude for all but a privileged elite.
Modern development, for all its flaws, has brought immense progress in living standards and quality of life that shouldn't be romanticized away.

What we have now is too much and disconnected from the nature around us. For example I like old japanese architecture because it was all done by hand (fun, commnunity, passion), with wood that grew locally so that it contracted and expanded with the weather and could stand it. >Modern development, for all its flaws, has brought immense progress in living standards and quality of life that shouldn't be romanticized away. Of course but it's imbalanced. The whole "infinite growth at any cost" thing combined with intense individualism is a recipe for solitude and mental health disaster. I'm not surprised populations are dropping.
