Amazing video, but I don't understand how the creator can just skip over JRPGs like that.
At the 90-minute mark he talks about how every single studio from the "golden age" (mid-80s to mid-90s) had disappeared by the early 2000s. This is obviously not the case if you consider some of the excellent RPGs created for console systems during that same time
- maxglute 3y agoPretty western focused. Here are some good reads about Korean, Chinese, and Japanese RPG history. I'd be curious if there's similar write ups for other cultures. I would like to see articles for India, East Europe, Middle East, Africa, South America etc. I don't know if they have to same conditions that made domestic game industry viable, but I'd like to think there's idle people everywhere with passion and RPG maker.

- paulryanrogers 3y agoPart 4 is all about JRPGs. As to "golden age" it appears he meant golden age of western CRPGs (or should we say tabletop-inspired RPGs). He even mentions that he's not making a video about the entire JRPG history.
- pcthrowaway 3y agoPart 4 is the shortest section of the video, and he skips over some of the most influential RPGs. He mentions some of the earlier ones (pre-1990) but then basically says "There's too much to talk about here so I'm going to skip it". I don't think he mentioned a single RPG for SNES other (maybe?) Final Fantasy VI This isn't even fair as a representation of RPG development and consumption in the West. Between ~1987 and 1997 almost all the commercially successful RPGs for consoles (in the West even) were "JRPGs". Overlooking the influence of these on all the later Western RPGs he does cover misses a big chunk of RPG history even as it focuses on the west.
- paulryanrogers 3y agoFinal Fantasy 7 is shown and mentioned along with 6. In the discussion of the shift to 3D with story and graphics over traditional RPG properties like rolls and character creation. Not sure what would satisfy you. But I think it's reasonable to take it for what it is, one YouTuber's retrospective on (mostly western) RPG evolution.
