I think something like this was a lot more common knowledge around 20 years ago, and now seems like mystic arts. It just takes a mindset of thinking that everything is bytes and binary, and after you've seen a couple SWAR snippets of stuff like popcount or first significant bit you're able do it these inferences yourself.
