I have some good friends that are lawyers and used to work as public defenders, not sure if they still do. Their experience was not exactly like the author's. Their clients lied to them, yes. But they were very competent, knew every loophole and detail of the legal machinery, having experienced all of it before and shared their knowledge with like-minded individuals while in jail. They were afraid their lawyers weren't up to the task.
