According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), "much" derives from Old High German and/or Old Norse with a reference to Greek. There are scholars who trace language written example by written example back a thousand years or more. Try browsing the OED some day. It's fascinating.
"Mucho" is likely derived from Latin, but I have no actual information on that.
