DHH sure makes his feelings on equity clear. Dogwhistles included.
The worst of the woke scourge has indeed passed in tech. Plenty of other companies have now dismantled their DEI bureaucracies or made them a shadow of their former might. It is possible to reverse course, and it's infinitely easier to do so in 2024 than it was in 2021. But it's still a motherfucker.
Microsoft made and withdrew a Nazi bot. People are playing with toys they don't understand.
Try dealing with humans more and software less. You might be surprised at the biases and hindrances they have faced that you haven't experienced. Talk to the receptionist and cleaning people; to your software engineers. Have a beer with them. Watch Office Space again.
Every person has a different and rewarding and resonating story to tell. They are not objects, but people with different experiences, some easy, some tough. A lifetime of challenges, loves, losses, successes and failures, of being looked upon as "different" can't be codified, eigenvectored or factored.
Enjoy life and people. They're beautiful.
