Before css animations landed I was utterly convinced animations could help the brain track relationship between items between views, but it turns out mentally it's not really that useful. To the point that I started missing win31 era pivot table like UIs. There's still some case of adding a few short animations (microinteractions in todays parlance) to give a bit of polish and indicate concurrency or liveness.
