I have a couple Roku products and really liked having an alternative to Apple/Google duopoly and isn't the TV manufacturer. Unfortunately, Roku is under the same short-term profit maximization pressure as everyone else. I rarely turn on a TV anymore and consume media (primarily Netflix and Amazon) on my laptop from websites viewed in Firefox.
- cyanydeez 3y agoeven if they weren't greedy assholes, specialized television is simply not a must have device and they're definitely needing to secure a cash flow. but that's because it's a lightbulb problem. I've been using the same android Nebula pico laser projector for almost a decade. I have YouTube and any other app service if I choose. it's all I need for, essentially, ever.
- FireBeyond 3y agoI know Plex isn't to everyone's cup of tea (I've created a Jellyfin VM, but haven't tweaked it to direct play most of my content), but since it got an Apple TV client, I've rarely turned on my Roku (I have an Ultra 4 in the entertainment center, and a Streambar in both my office and the guest bedroom).
- A4ET8a8uTh0 3y agoI am currently running plex as unraid docker. I keep wondering if plex one day will bow to the same pressure and start making it unusable for my purposes. Still, now that I have everything running mostly the way I want, I don't want to spend a weekend tweaking stuff. Is jellyfin an easy move?

- WXLCKNO 3y agoI think for Plex it's only a matter of time. I run a dedicated server with overseer/radarr/sonarr and a bunch of other arrs and utilities and I love it. As time goes on they keep adding social features no one wants and it feels like at some point they'll make a decision that fucks it up.
- ryandrake 3y agoI just have a bunch of video files on an NFS share. No need for all these 3rd party software packages. I’m counting on Linux’s nfs subsystem not adding social features, chat, or other terrible features.
- biomcgary 3y agoI ran Plex a decade ago, but the commercial direction that the project took scared me off when setting up a new media server a couple years ago. I run Jellyfin for all my local content. Not too difficult to set up and maintenance in minimal. The biggest thing is having files named in the format that is recognized. The built it workflow for manually updating the media ID is decent, but takes a bit of time when a lot of content is involved.
