I don't think you realize your very own example is proving that it's actually bad. If Microsoft did what Apple did, you wouldn't have steam as the one gaming store, you would have the windows store. Open store competition in the gaming area leading to steam being far in the lead, not the OS gatekeeper, is a proof that it allows for more choices for consumers and the better one taking the lead.
