I'm a climate scientist. If you knew what I know, you'd be terrified too
- rekabis 3y agoThe unfortunate bit is that “doing Science correctly” is failing us where Climate Change is involved. In particular, 1. Data should only be released to publication once it has been fully assembled and analyzed. This ensures that all possible sources of data have been fully expressed so they don’t get hidden or obscured, and that appropriate conclusions have been drawn that has the smallest chance of deviating from future research & results. 2. Any conclusions are couched in as conservative of tones as possible, so as to avoid speculation and flights of fantasy which aren’t supported by the evidence. Both of these are resulting in CC “predictions” that are either happening decades earlier than predicted, far worse than predicted, or (and now rapidly approaching “almost always”) both at the same time. While this is Science being done correctly, we are being faced with a threat of our own manufacture that requires responses that far outstrip what milquetoast efforts Science has produced so far. We need non-conservative, aggressive, holistic predictions and likely outcomes that are still highly realistic; the kind that hauls people bodily up by their collars and slaps them heartily across the face.
