Assuming that's what's going on and they've pushed an update that
cripples the function of customer devices - rather than simply removing
something server-side.
My point in the above comment is that this is not a civil matter but a
criminal transgression.
Sabotaging the functionality of someones property, either punitively
or as (ransom) leverage, invokes computer misuse. Regardless any
contractual 'excuses' the company offers, that's how this needs to be
prosecuted, and indeed framed in the press.
