Since Marquez is so famous, they feel the need to put this novel on a pedestal, even though it might just be "okay". Which of course is okay in itself. I also think the sons contradict themselves when they say that their father lost the intellectual power to judge if the book should be published, yet didn't he also write it during this time? So I understand it like Marquez was aware of his mental problems and that's why he decided not to publish.
